HOW TO SET BETTER GOALS
As we settle into the new year, you may be thinking about how you want to use this year to improve on the last one, but how will you do it? How can you set better goals for yourself, and set strategies in place to help you achieve them?
Fortunately, it’s not as hard as you might think. We’ve put together a list of ideas that can help you. Follow the tips listed below, and you’ll find it easy to set better goals for yourself in the coming year. Better yet, you’ll know exactly how to start turning those goals into action plans that result in real accomplishments.
Be SMART About Your Goals This Year
The SMART system has been around for quite some time. Still, it is one of the most effective methods you can use to set better goals for yourself. It’s also applicable to practically every area of your life. Many of our clients use the SMART system to help them with investment choices, but it can even help in your personal life. Whatever your goals may be, ensure that they meet these criteria:
Instead of saying something like “I want to grow my real estate portfolio this year,” try something like, “I want to purchase ten new properties”. This will give you a defined target.
You must be able to tell when you’ve achieved your goal. In the above case, you would be successful when you had closed the deals on ten new lots.
Your goals should depend more on you than on the people around you. Deciding to buy a specific property may not be feasible if the current owner doesn’t want to sell. However, making it your goal to buy any ten properties is something you can probably accomplish with the right resources.
A firm goal shouldn’t be too difficult. It should be something you can reasonably expect to accomplish. If purchasing ten new properties seems ambitious, maybe lower the number.
Putting a deadline on your goal can be motivating. Instead of deciding that you’ll purchase the properties at some point, make it your intent to buy at least 3 each quarter.
Other Helpful Tips
The SMART system can help you set more achievable goals, but you may still need strategies for working on them. Action for Happiness recommends the following:
Write Them Down:
Having a visual reminder of a commitment increases the odds that you will honor it.
Tell a Friend:
When you tell someone else you plan to do something, you’ll feel more responsible for following through on your boast.
Break the Goal into Steps:
It’s much easier to do part of something than to do the whole thing at once. Turn one large task into many smaller ones, and start chipping away at them.
The strategies listed above can help you set better goals. More importantly, though, they can also increase your odds of making them a reality. Now go out there and make 2018 your year!
